## What does Mode Function do in Excel?

Mode in excel is a functionwhich is used to find out which number is occurring most of the time in a given array, this is a mathematical inbuilt formula and to use this formula we need to type the keyword =MODE( and then we select the cells or the array of data and this function provides us with the result.

### How to Use Mode Function in Excel? (with Examples)

#### Example #1

**Find the mode from the following data: 12, 13, 10, 10, 8, 10, 7, 7, 9, 10**

**Solution:** We will first organize the data so that the calculation of mode becomes easy. The data is as follows: 7, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10, 10, 10, 12, 13.

Using the above-given information we will do the calculation of mode as follows,

Therefore, calculation using mode formula in excel will be as follows,

**The mode will be –**

Hence, mode =** 10**

We can observe that the number 7 occurs twice in the data set, the numbers 8 and 9 occur only once in the data set, the number 10 occurs four times in the set, the numbers 12 and 13 occur only once in the mentioned data set.

We need to look for the value that has been repeated the most number of times*.* We find that the frequency of the number 10 has been the most in this set.

**Note**: Even by merely inspecting the data, some people will be able to locate the mode, which is 10.

#### Example #2

**Tom is the owner of a shoe store. He is facing a typical business problem. Certain popular shoe sizes go out of stock too soon. Hence, customers complain that the shoe size they require is not available for purchase. Tom wants to find out which is the most popular shoe size so that he can cater to his clients. Calculate the mode in excel from the following data to help Tom determine the most popular shoe size: Shoe Sizes: 6, 8, 7, 7, 9, 7, 10, 8, 7, 9.**

**Solution: **We will first organize the data so that the calculation of mode becomes easy. The organized data is as follows: 6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10

Below is given data for calculation of mode in excel of a shoe store.

Therefore, calculation ousing mode formula will be as follows,

**Mode of shoe store will be –**

Hence, mode = **7**

We find that shoe size 6 occurs once, 7 occurs four times, 8 occurs twice, 9 occurs twice and 10 occurs once. From this observation, we can infer that the shoe size 7 occurs the most number of times (four times).

Clients purchase the number of shoes of size 7 and hence Tom would have to ensure that this shoe size is always in stock due to higher demand.

#### Example #3

**Martha Smith is a wheat merchant. Her employee points out that the majority of customers demand wheat in bags of a certain weight as it is convenient for them to carry. Find out what is the weight of bags demanded by most customers from the following data:**

Below is given data for calculation of the weight of bags

Therefore, calculation of maximum frequency will be as follows,

**The maximum frequency will be –**

Maximum frequency =**32**

We need to find out the highest frequency from the above weights. It can be seen that the highest frequency is 32 and the weight that corresponds to the highest frequency is 10 kg. Hence, the mode is 10 kg.

Therefore, the weight of bags demanded by most customers is 10 kg.

Note: It is important to note that 32 (highest frequency) is not the mode. The weight that corresponds to the highest frequency that is 10 kg is the mode. 32 is merely the highest number of occurrences.

#### Example #4

**The Statistical Department of a town was of the view that the people in the town have too many children. It commissioned a survey to find out the number of children that the couples had. The surveyors went to each house and asked the people for information related to the number of children that they had. The results of the sample survey showing the number of children that each person has are as follows: 3, 2, 0, 1, 3, 4, 2, 6, 2, 2, 4, 2. Calculate the mode in excel from this data.**

**Solution**: In Excel, there is an inbuilt function for a mode that can be used to calculate the mode of a group of numbers. Select a blank cell and type this formula =MODE.SNGL(B2: B13) (B2: B13 indicates the range you want to calculate mode from). The mode is 2 children.

Using the above-given information we will do the calculation of mode as follows,

Therefore, calculation using mode formula in excel will be as follows,

**Mode = 2**

**Note:** The formula MODE(Range of Cells) can also be used. It is a Compatibility function for older versions of Excel. However, Excel recommends the use of MODE.SNGL function.

### Relevance and Uses

The excel mode function can also be used for qualitative data and labels. Qualitative data contains attributes such as good/bad/average or high/low or male/female etc. For instance, let us assume 3 people rated the quality of restaurant food as ‘good’, 2 as ‘average’ and 7 as ‘bad’. In such a case, the bad quality of food is the mode as it has the most number of occurrences. Please note that the mean cannot be calculated in such a case involving qualitative data. Hence, the mode function is used.

While we are analyzing the prices of goods sold, most of the goods are sold at a particular price point. It may to futile to calculate mean in such a case. The price that most customers paid is useful in framing the pricing policy of products.
