**Formula of Excel Value (Table of Contents)**

## Excel Value Formula

In excel we have a value formula which converts texts into numbers. Suppose we have some data in a given format and we want it in the general number format then this is done by the value formula in excel. This is not the most commonly used formula as excel has an inbuilt function to convert text to numbers.

We can check the value function from the formula tab in excel. It is under text functions.

If we click on text function we can see value formula in the bottom of it.

The syntax for value formula is as follows:

### How to use Value Formula in Excel?

Let us look at the few examples to learn how this formula works in general.

#### Example #1

We have the following set of dates which we want to convert it in number format. We will use the value function to do the same. Have a look at the below data,

4.9 (1,353 ratings)

What we want to do is convert these dates into number format. There are three ways to do it. One we can copy the date and paste it as values or we can change the format from the home tab and last we can use the value function.

- In cell B2, write the following formula,

- Select the data in cell A2 for the input text,

- Close the parenthesis and press enter to see the result.

- Now drag the formula to cell B4 for the rest of the data.

This is how we use this function if we want to convert dates into values or numbers.

#### Example #2

In the previous example, we used dates as input now let us take currencies as input and see if the function can convert these too into values. Have a look at the data below,

We have the data for sales done in years and the sales are in INR currency format. Now as said there are three ways to do this. One we can copy the sales and paste it as values or we can change the format from the home tab and last we can use the value formula in excel.

- In cell C2, write the following formula,

- Select the data in cell B2 as input,

- Close the parenthesis and press enter to see the result.

- Now copy the formula to the rest of the data i.e. to cell C5.

This is how we use value function if the input data is in currency format.

#### Example #3

Now let us use value function with the other functions and see its usage in normal day to day data. Suppose we have addresses for people with house number and a block in it. We want the house number separated from the address. We will use value and LEN function together to do so. Have a look at the below data,

We want to separate the first numbers which are the house number from the addresses.

- In cell B2 write the following formula,

- Press Enter to see the result.

- Copy the formula to cell B5 for the rest of the data.

We had numbers in the left of the data so we used a left function with it too.

### Things to Remember

There are few things which we need to remember about value function in excel:
