Full Form of UIDAI – Unique Identification Authority of India
The Full Form of UIDAI stands for Unique Identification Authority of India. It is a statutory body which was established by the Indian government in January 2009 with a view to providing it with the sole authority of issuing unique identification numbers (UIDs), also known as Aadhaar, to all the residents of India.

Vision and Mission of UIDAI
The vision of UIDAI is to provide unique identification to the residents of India and simultaneously provide a platform to check the authenticity of such a unique identification number.
UIDAI works with the following mission:
- To transparently provide subsidies, benefits and other services to the Indian residents through unique identification number.
- To provide for proper method and policy for issue of Aadhaar number to the applicants using their biometric and demographic information.
- To develop a facility for Aadhaar holders to update and authenticate their identity.
- To ensure access to the technology infrastructure at all times.
- To build an association which shall work towards the vision and mission of UIDAI.
- To ensure the confidentiality of records of the Aadhaar holders.
- To ensure that the provisions of Aadhaar Act are complied with by all individuals.
- To make the necessary rules and regulations to execute the provisions contained in the Aadhaar Act.
Why Aadhaar is Important?
Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit number issued by UIDAI to the residents of India after proper verification.
Aadhaar number provides a unique identity to each resident of India. Once the Aadhaar number is obtained, the same can be authenticated by the use of the UIDAI website. It acts as an identity proof for the residents, based on which they can avail services, government subsidies and other benefits. The physical copy of Aadhaar acts as a portable identity proof and can be used by the resident in any part of the country.
Not only Aadhaar is important to the members, but it of great use for the government as well. The government can be assured by way of Aadhaar that the benefits of the welfare schemes are transferred to the end-users by linking the schemes with Aadhaar cards. Doing so will ensure that the schemes are not being misused by any other person for whom the scheme is not intended.
Let us have a look at the organizational structure of UIDAI. The authority consists of:
- Two part-time members
- Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who is also the Member-Secretary
Further, UIDAI has its headquarters in New Delhi and a total of eight Regional Offices in India. UIDAI also has two data centres, in Karnataka and Haryana.
At the Headquarter of UIDAI located in New Delhi, the CEO is assisted by seven Deputy Director General and Joint Secretary level Officers of the Government of India.
The Regional Offices are being headed by Deputy Director-General, who is assisted by Assistant Directors General, Deputy Directors, Section Officers, Assistant Section Officers, Senior Accounts Officer, accountant and personal staff.

Here are some interesting facts about UIDAI.
- As stated by Chief of the World Bank, Aadhaar ID is the world’s largest system of Biometric ID.
- The 12 Digit Aadhaar Numbers generated by UIDAI are random and unique. No two persons can have the same ID.
- Government of India had started the Aadhaar project in January 2009 under the Aadhaar Act.
- As per records, the Government of India spent a whopping amount of INR 9950 crores in the completion of its Aadhaar Project.
- Nowadays Aadhaar ID is becoming essential for availing various government schemes and benefits.
- Pankaj Kumar is the current CEO of UIDAI.
- Data of Aadhaar holders are being stored by UIDAI in more than 800 servers located at its offices.
- UIDAI has started E-Aadhaar service wherein Aadhaar card can be downloaded online by any holder.
- In June 2014, UIDAI had introduced Aadhaar based biometric attendance systems at government offices.
UIDAI has achieved to give a unique identity to the residents of India by way of issuing Aadhaar Cards. The identity can also be authenticated by using the UIDAI portal. Also, one does not need to visit the Aadhaar centres in case the ID cards are lost since the same can be downloaded from the UIDAI website itself.
