What Is The Full Form of UIDAI?

The full form of UIDAI stands for the Unique Identification Authority of India. It is statutory. The Indian government established it in January 2009, providing it with the sole authority to issue Unique Identification Numbers (UIDs), also known as Aadhaar, to all the residents of India.

UIDAI has achieved to give a unique identity to the residents of India by issuing Aadhaar cards. One can also authenticate the identity by using the UIDAI portal. Also, one does not need to visit the Aadhaar centers if one loses the ID card since one can download the same from the UIDAI.

Full Form of UIDAI Explained

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is a legislative authority founded by the Government of India in 2016 under the Aadhaar Act 2016. The main objective of forming this entity is to make sure that no duplicate identity exists in the country. UIDAI is headquartered in New Delhi, India, with its regional offices scattered all across the nation.

The UIDAI was recognized as one of the segments of the Planning Commission, which has now become the NITI Aayog. However, the government started making changes in the provisions and modified the “Allocation of Business Rules.” The motive of the Indian government behind doing so was to include the UIDAI in the Department of Electronics and Information Technology.

This inclusion of the unique identification process transformed the ID verification and assessment procedures to a great extent as the records started to be fed online with the advanced biometric system in place. The UIDAI number assigned to each Indian national became the Aadhaar, a Hindi term meaning Foundation in English. Today, these Aadhaar Cards are considered one of the major identity proofs for the residents in the country.

Further, UIDAI has its headquarters in New Delhi and eight regional offices in India. UIDAI also has two data centers in Karnataka and Haryana.

At UIDAI’s headquarters in New Delhi, the seven Deputy Director General and Joint Secretary-level Officers of India’s Government assist the CEO.

The regional offices’ is headed by Deputy Director-General, assisted by Assistant Directors General, Deputy Directors, Section Officers, Assistant Section Officers, Senior Accounts Officer, accountant, and personal staff.

  • As stated by the World Bank Chief, Aadhaar ID is the world’s largest biometric ID system.
  • The 12-digit Aadhaar numbers generated by UIDAI are random and unique. Therefore, no two persons can have the same ID.

The vision of UIDAI is to provide unique identification to the residents of India and simultaneously provide a platform to check the authenticity of such a unique identification number.

UIDAI works with the following mission:

  • To provide subsidies, benefits, and other services to Indian residents through a Unique Identification Number.
  • To provide proper methods and policies for the issue of the Aadhaar number issued to the applicants using their biometric and demographic information.
  • To develop a facility for Aadhaar holders to update and authenticate their identity.
  • To ensure access to the technology infrastructure at all times.
  • To build an association that shall work towards the vision and mission of UIDAI.
  • To ensure the confidentiality of records of the Aadhaar holders.
  • To ensure that the provisions of the Aadhaar Act are complied with by all individuals.
  • To make the necessary rules and regulations to execute the provisions of the Aadhaar Act.


Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit number issued by UIDAI to the residents of India after proper verification.

The Aadhaar number provides a unique identity to each resident of India. Once obtained the Aadhaar number, the UIDAI website can authenticate the same. It acts as an identity proof for the residents, based on which they can avail of services, government subsidies, and other benefits. The physical copy of the Aadhaar acts as a portable identity proof. The resident can use it in any part of the country.

Aadhaar is important to the members, but it is greatly useful for the government. The government can assure by way of Aadhaar that the welfare schemes’ benefits transfer to the end-users by linking the schemes with Aadhaar cards. In addition, doing so will ensure that the other person does not misuse the schemes for whom the scheme intends.
