The life expectancy calculator is a very complicated calculator wherein too many factors are involved such as the current age, gender, and lifestyle habits such as whether the person smokes or doesn’t smoke, whether the person has any kind of disease or inherited any disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. Even drinking habits affect life expectancy. All these factors need to be taken into consideration, and accordingly, based on gender, the above table is derived, and further upon lifestyle habits adjustment is made for the same as well, and the final figure would the expected life expectancy of the individual.

How to Calculate Life Expectancy?

One needs to follow the below steps in order to calculate the Life Expectancy.

Step #1 – Find out the current age of the individual.

Step #2 – Determine the gender of the individual as the second step

Step #3 – Find out the life expectancy figure from the above table based on current age and gender.

Step #4 – Now determine the lifestyle habits of the individual, whether he or she is a smoker or non-smoker.

Step #5 – Make adjustments if it is determining that the individual is a smoker, and if non-smoker, then we can ignore this step and the life expectancy determine in step 3 will the final figure, which needs to be added to the current age.

Step #6 – If the individual was a smoker, then this resultant figure after adjustment would be the life expectancy figure, and that figure will be added to the current age.

Life Expectancy Calculator Example

Mr. Vivek, who currently ages 29 years old, has been living in Delaware since birth. He is 69 inches tall and weighs around 180 pounds, and has never reported any medical or health issues. He is currently staying single, and he doesn’t drink, but he has a habit of smoking sometimes, and that is the only habit he is unable to escape from. He has started his own business, and he has a family that is dependent upon him. He is looking for a life insurance policy, and the company has received the request from his side and the details of his life and lifestyle as well.

The company wants to calculate the life expectancy for Mr. Vivek and accordingly wants to calculate the life insurance premium for policy insured for $500,000.

Note the company has a policy for adjusting the life expectancy for a period of 10 years if the person turnouts to be a smoker.

Based on the above information, you are required to calculate Life Expectancy.

Solution:

We are given below details about Mr. Vivek.

  1. He is Male
  2. His current age is 29 years old
  3. He is a smoker
  4. He doesn’t have any pre-existing disease
  5. His height is 69 inches
  6. His weight is 180 pounds

Based on his current age, which is 29, we can determine from above the remaining number of years he is expected to live, that is 48.63, and further, he is a smoker, and the adjustment factor is 10, which will reduce the life expectancy.

Life Expectancy Calculator Example 1

Now we can use the below formula to determine the life expectancy of the individual.

Life Expectancy = C+ X – F

Life Expectancy Calculator Example 1-1
  • = 29 + 48.63 – 10
  • = 67.63

Therefore, the life expectancy per above calculation is 67.63 years.

Conclusion

As discussed above, life expectancy is complicated and is based upon several factors, including age, lifestyle habits, gender, and pre-existing disease, if any. Note the table above can either overestimate the life expectancy or underestimate the life expectancy as the lifestyle keeps changing, and the figures are based on 2015 also.
